Context: Union Cabinet raised the wage ceiling for mandatory Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) coverage from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000/month. Effective 17 September 2026; expected to bring 51 lakh–1 crore additional workers under EPFO.

  • EPFO: Statutory organisation under the Ministry of Labour & Employment, administering:
    • Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) — retirement savings.
    • Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), 1995 — pension benefits.
    • Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI), 1976 — life/death insurance benefit.
  • New wage ceiling: ₹25,000/month for mandatory EPFO coverage, up from ₹15,000.
  • Employees’ EPS contribution: 8.33% of ₹25,000 = ₹2,082.50/month, compared with the earlier ₹1,250.
  • Government expenditure: Estimated additional annual outgo of about ₹11,339 crore.
  • Significance: Expands access to provident fund, pension and insurance protection and supports greater formalisation of employment.
  • EPFO is one of the three statutory social-security organisations administered by the Ministry of Labour & Employment, alongside the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) and Central Board for Workers’ Welfare (CBWW).

Prelims Question

Q1.  Following the revision of the wage ceiling, suppose an employee becomes eligible for EPS contribution calculated at 8.33% of the revised ceiling of ₹25,000 per month.

Which one of the following correctly represents the monthly EPS contribution at the revised ceiling and its increase over the earlier ceiling of ₹15,000?

(a) ₹2,082.50 and ₹832.50
(b) ₹2,082.50 and ₹1,250
(c) ₹2,500 and ₹1,250
(d) ₹2,082.50 and ₹582.50

Answer: (a)

Explanation:

At the revised ceiling:

₹25,000 × 8.33% = ₹2,082.50

Earlier:

₹15,000 × 8.33% = ₹1,249.50, conventionally stated as approximately ₹1,250.

Therefore, the increase is approximately:

₹2,082.50 − ₹1,250 = ₹832.50

Hence, (a) is correct.
